Baby Holly, brand new

Baby Holly, brand new

18 December 2014

When we travelled to Bali a few years ago, I was 6 months pregnant with Mikaela and so had a lot of 'baby talk' with the locals there. Apparently babies are considered holy for the first six months of their life. I can completely understand the reasoning behind this and especially for the first few days of their existance in the world.

I met baby Holly when she was freshly out of hospital at home, just a few days old. I could have stared at her all day long. Linda, thank you so much for allowing me into your space at such a precious time, it was an absolute honour to witness your love for this precious little soul.

James, Phoebe and William

26 November 2014

I did a shoot with James, Phoebe and their baby boy, William, who is 5 months old. He is such a gentle soul with a wise presence about him. He was so chilled the whole shoot despite not sleeping the whole day.

Megs, Stix and Baby Elizabeth

Megs, Stix and Baby Elizabeth

11 June 2014

I've known Megs and Stix for some time now and they are some of the most sincere, honest and lovely people I know - so it is absolutely beautiful to witness them become doting parents to baby Elizabeth.

We did the shoot in their home on a very cold Cape Town winter's day when Elizabeth was 12 days old. She was bundled up warmly for most of the time and stayed completely wide awake and alert until I was about to leave and she passed out on her mamma.

Megs and Stix, thanks for allowing me to capture this precious time for you guys.

Baby Harrison

Baby Harrison

10 April 2014

I absolutely adore photographing babies! Harrison was close to 6 months old at the time of this shoot and as babies continually do, changed his routine and hadn't had his usual nap at the time that we did this. He was clearly tired but such a chilled out little guy and I don't think he cried once.

He seemed to be very happy in the outdoor bathtub in his parent's garden.

Jessica, Kurt and baby Jake

Jessica, Kurt and baby Jake

17 February 2014

Jake was two weeks old when we did this shoot and super-well-behaved.

Sometimes when babies hit the two week mark they can get a bit colicky and restless, but this little  guy was super-chilled -  just like his doting parents.

Gianni, Nina and Stella

Gianni, Nina and Stella

03 February 2014

Gianni and Nina are from Norway and had never been to South Africa before; they came over especially to meet their baby girl, Stella.

They had only spent two weeks together at the time that we did this shoot but they were complete naturals as parents and the connection that they already had with their daughter was intensely beautiful.

Andrew, Jen and Susara

Andrew, Jen and Susara

13 January 2014

Andrew and Jen are very enthusiastic Table-Mountain enthusiasts and appreciative of the natural beauty of Cape Town. They were both regularly climbing/walking/running to the top of Lions Head during Jen's pregnancy - right up to a day or two before the birth of Susara (who is named after a beautiful hybrid protea.)

Here are some photos I took in their home when Susara was just 5 days old. She was amazingly alert for such a little baba.

Anton and Carey were at varsity with me quite a few years back during our wild and carefree days. Times have changed a bit for us all and now they are parents to the most gorgeous and easygoing little girl, Chloe, who was 15 months old when we did this shoot.

Baby Chiara at 9 months

Baby Chiara at 9 months

20 November 2013

I completely love the innocence and deliciousness of babies and baby Chiara is particularly edible. I couldn't believe how much she had grown since I photographed her when she was a tiny baba at ten days old.

We started the shoot at Greg and Vanessa's home in Seapoint, headed outdoors for a while and then back home to capture some bathtime and 'nude' shots. Greg and Vanessa are such smitten and doting parents, it is so beautiful to see.

18 November 2013

I absolutely love the preciousness of the first few weeks of a little life. For me, photographing this time is as much about the love of new parents and this beautiful connection as well as photographing babies themselves.

I could have stared at Thomas all day, he is perfect.

Lara and Baby Ryder

Lara and Baby Ryder

31 August 2013

I did a maternity shoot with Lara a few months back when little Ryder was a neat little bump. When she asked me if I would come to the hospital soon after her baby's birth to take some shots, I thought it would be a great idea. I personally have very few images of my babies during this time and there is something so precious about the first few days after birth. Lara sent me some images that she loved from some other shoots and I was really excited at the prospect of doing a shoot in hospital with a baby so brand new.

As with so many other things in life, the reality is always completely different to what you have in mind. When I arrived at the hospital on a cold and rainy Cape Town winter's day, Lara was in huge pain from a brutal Caesar op, she hadn't slept in 48 hours and little Ryder was unsettled as he was struggling to feed due to a tongue-tie. The last thing she really wanted was photos being taken.

But I stayed to take some shots anyway, so aware of the vulnerability of a mother to a new baby who is completely different from any other baby; the combined wonder and terror of getting to know a new little creature and sustain and nurture it relentlessly - all while your own body has been ripped to pieces.

Thank you Lara for allowing me into this sacred space and for letting me stay with you for a little while and observing your beautiful mother-heart.
